If you caught up with me on Twitter this past Friday night, you might have seen I was tweeting the debate. There were a few of us twitterbugs who spent the 90 minutes volleying ideas back and forth as the candidates answered questions and illuminated their positions.
And here's the coolest part: the tweeting was civil, educated, and mannerly. There was nary a bit of mud-slinging or name-calling. Just honest folks who shared views and sparred on policy.
The reason?
Well, IMHO, the reason is simple because it's simply American.
No matter which side of the aisle you agree with, at the end of the day we all want the same things: to take care of our families, pay our bills, save a bit for the future, and be able to turn out the lights at night knowing our nation, our communities, and our homes are safe and secure.
(Both nominees campaign ad managers might do well to take a bit of advice from little old me; I'm sick of smears, half-truths, and innuendo already - are you?)
I'm a conservative, not a life-long one I-bleed-red one, though. I grew up in dominantly Democratic state (MD) where I watched the goings-on in both our state's and nation's capital (I lived 45 min from Washington DC) daily via the newspapers, and television media. Politics, particularly the failure of liberal politicians to truly help people graduate from depending on government programs generation after generation, were commonly discussed at our dinner table.
When I registered to vote in my senior year of high school, I registered as an Independent. I knew I didn't agree with what the Democrats held near and dear (particularly on abortion) but didn't feel I could check "Republican" yet as I felt I needed a bit more life experience.
Nearly two decades later, I can tell you I've been a registered Republican for most of my adult life. I'm a conservative.
Before you click away in search of a more liberal blog, I hope you take a second to watch this YouTube video. In ten minutes, you'll learn the whos and the whys behind the subprime mess and come away more educated.
Thanks to Mrs. Fussypants for bravely posting this (I caught it first at her blog) and her own conservative position. She's got many, many more subscribers to lose than I do here at my little blogjoint so her courage is applaudable.
Comment if you wish - I love a good discussion. I know you'll keep it civil and mannerly because hey - you're part of this very cool blogosphere, too.
Love you; thanks for reading!
