Writing Wednesday: Bowl of Cherries

This is an uber-quick book review; naptime is getting shorter and shorter around here.

I finished this book about a week ago. And I enjoyed how the adventure of the storyline juxtaposed against current events.

When I started reading, it took me several pages to realize the story is set in current times. The setting and the writing style (which evoked memories of Catch 22 and Catcher in the Rye) had me thinking of bygone times.

Like any adventure, this one is driven by folly and love, which can be a folly unto itself. I refuse to play spoiler and ruin the story for you, but I will tell you that I'll be Googling to see if the treasure sought actually exists anywhere or has any historical basis.

The ending was a bit too open-ended and easy for me. I don't know how I would have written it differently; in any ending, the writer has to decide whether to end on a note of optimism or one of pessimism.

And, a note on why I wanted to read this particular book: Millard Kaufman was 90 when he wrote this. After a long career of writing for different entertainment venues, this is his first novel.

A first novel at 90.

There is hope for me as a writer.
